Bah, I lost two of my best reds last night, and possibly two more who aren't looking so great
Then about 5 more who were almost dead when I found them but they've since perked up remarkably.
It all started yesterday morning. I went in to do changes on the bigger containers at about noon. I was running low on Amazon Rain so I filled one of my three buckets and dechlorinated so I could use a bit to water down my AR. I carried that bucket into the fishroom and came back to fill the other two. I added the AR and thought "Did I dechlorinate?" and assumed I did, but I guess I didn't. I didn't even realize it until about 11 that night when I went in and found two dead, covered with a heavy film, and the rest in that row were all laying on the bottom, pale and heaving, one was on his back
Some of my ST & DT's
That's what made me notice was my one favoritist little DT was looking clampy and had white stuff hanging from his anus ,he's right by the door on the top shelf and usually greets me everytime I walk in. I had started the wc's with him, and for some reason I used the second bucket to fill his container, so he was the only one in that row that it happened to. Which broke the pattern and totally confused me because it was all of the second shelf bettas that were dying/dead.
I was so puzzled and upset, it was a panic and I had to literally rewind to figure out what on Earth happened. When I did figure it out, uggh I was so pissed at myself. So I prayed as I grabbed a cup and put some water and a heavy amount of dechlorinator in it. I poured it in their containers and took the two worst away, then I just tried to talk them through it. They were attentive but pretty upset. They ate like 5 minutes after I fixed the situation, which surprised me.
I was almost too scared to turn the lights out last night for fear that they'd just wither away in the dark
When I woke up this morning I was a little nervous to even look but they all seemed good, the two who were the worst are once again red. I moved them back with the rest of the boys but they still worry me.
If this had happened when I was doing smaller containers, I could have easily wiped out a few dozen fish
It was just a freak thing but it sucked big time.
arrgh, anyway. Just had to ramble about it. It was quite traumatizing. Lesson to be learned - even when you're pretty sure you've done something,if there's any doubt, do it over.
