I've been offered some freshwater shrimps , don't know anything about them only what I've just read on the internet . Are they safe to go in with ivebearers some internet posts say they'll eat the young , other internet posts say they don't eat the young fish ??

If the fish can fit in there mouth they will eat it If the fish is dead thay will eat it they will clean up your tank really fast I love them my LPS had them for some time and I could not stop loving them but they stopped so sad:(

Thanks -  I only keep livebearers so I'll give them a miss .

It generally regarded that most shrimps are suitable with most fish, including livebearers, usually its the other way round, the fish being a danger to shrimps.

However as for fry, I do think most shrimps will eat small fry if small enough to catch.

There are many varieties of shrimps, generally Red Cherry  Shrimps are regarded as the most hardiest and cheapest to obtain, although i know you has been offered some shrimps but you do not mention which species.

These will usually breed once are settled down.

Amanos are very good for cleaning algae and help to keep tank clean in general. But again, i think these will eat fry given the chance.

My son kept amano shrimps with his Endlers and we didn't seem to lose any fry.

Ghost shrimp is what I had I like them they did not eat my fry

Jam, I think you misunderstood what Snork said - you livebearers will eat the shrimplets, if you get a species of shrimp that breeds readily, but the most shrimp will not eat live fish.

Just make sure you aren't getting macrobrachium shrimp, as these will attack and kill fish.
