Ever since I saw the little figure eight puffers at the pet store I fell in love with them. I think puffers are amazing.

Anyway, I've done some researching, and have come to realize that there is a ton of debate over whether there are any true freshwater puffers. I've had some say that all end up either being brackish or marine, and then other people who have said that they have healthy thriving puffers in their freshwater tanks.

My question is this if there are actually any (smaller) freshwater puffers?

the smallest puffer is actually freshwater :p
The dwarf puffer (Carinotetraodon travancoricus) is a completely freshwater puffer and requires no more than 5Gallons each :) More information on them can be found here.

There's other types as well, but the require slightly larger tanks (around 20gallons) ... like the South American Puffer (Colomesus asellus) information can be found here and here.

Red-Eye Puffer (Carinotetraodon lorteti) information can be found here

And many more! This should however be in the oddball section :)

--Edit--
and then it got moved :p

The Dragon Puffer is indeed freshwater, but it is not Carinotetraodon lorteti.

Carinotetraodon lorteti is the Crested or Red-Eye puffer.

The Dragon Puffer is Tetraodon palembangensis, also known as the Humpback Puffer or King-Kong Puffer.

That profile is incorrect, I'll see about getting it sorted out.

/edit- profile corrected.

Thank you very much! I happened to find a nice dwarf puffer forum, and they seem perfect ^_^ I just need to ensure that I'll have the money for feeding them before I commit.

The Dwarf Puffer forum?

You can usually find them for around $2 at Petsmart.

Edited my post to fit it better :)

Hurray :) I just got two little DPs from a LFS ^_^ They are adoreable and are doing great so far. They were a tad more expensive than what you mentioned (mine were learly $5 each >.<) but I also know that this place has good healthy fish and actually know what they are talking about (the experiences I've had at petco and petsmart around here make me want to slam my face into a wall due to the employee's incompetance).

So anyway.. surprisingly sold my firemouth for $5 as well, and ended up paying $13 for some mysis shrimp, and two DPs. I can already tell that one of them -rushing up to see what food I had - is a little more ambitious than the other, who likes to trail off on its own to explore.

My cat and I shall keep a close watch on them to make sure they continue to stay happy :)
