I have just heard about a freshwater pufferfish

Am amazed that they even exist...

I have never seen one in any LFS I have visited, only saltwater ones.

Does anyone know anything about them, what fish they should be kept with etc and what they like/dislike in the aquarium?

Also if anyone knows where to get one I would greatly appreciate it!

Has anyone bought any fish off of the internet sites that offer them and deliver them? Is this safe? I found a few websites that have them in stock... but am wary of purchasing one this way.

Thanks x katie x

Must not be kept in community tanks

dwarf puffer is a common one

They are hard work not really a beginers fish

the majority of puffer fish commonly kept in aquariums are freshwater species :)

i actually find my dwarf puffers very easy to keep, i do a 50% water change once a week and feed them bloodworm every other day. i wouldn't recommend them to a beginner but i certainly wouldn't say they were a hard fish to keep.

Dwarf Puffers and South American Puffers are the commonly seen species that require freshwater, Dps are fairly easy to keep as far as keeping puffers goes, SAP's a little more difficult as they require their teeth to be clipped a few times per year.

Figure 8, Ceylon and Spotted Puffers are also commonly seen being advertised as freshwater species, however they are actually brackish and don't live long if kept in freshwater.

There's a little guide pinned at the top of the forum :)

I just got 5 for a 85l planted tank and they seem to love it. We think we have 1 male and 4 females (lucky guy) but they are a little to young to sex properly...So far we have had no problems with the shrimp we have in the tank or our bristle nose, however these were in the tank for a while before we added the dp's so they know all the hiding places if they have any bother!!! They are great fish to watch, very nosey, always up front trying to see what you're doing!!
