Hey guys i was buying some fish at a local store and i saw that they had eels. Freshwater eels. If anyone can give me some information about them it would be great. Like what they eat what fish are they comparable with and tank size. I tried looking for some info but couldnt find it. Thanx again for any info.

I have always found that out off all spiney freshwater eels the fire eel is the most docile, as I have kept an 8" fire eel temperarily will neon tetras before, and angel fish. This is because my fire eel in particular refuses to eat anything other than bloodworm. Although i might just be special. :D

Wouldn't give the neons much for their chances -- spiny eels are out-and-out predators. I've made the mistake of keeping a tyre-track eel (M. armatus) with platies, only to watch the platies disappear one at a time...

Spiny eels can be tricky to feed. I've had good results with earthworms (from the garden, but make sure no-one has sprayed with pesticides for a while) and also small bits of frozen prawn (from the grocery store). Bags of frozen prawns are a reliable standby for most fish: they're cheap and willingly accepted by lots of "problem" fish such as glassfish and bumblebee gobies.

Cheers,

Neale
