freshwater clams

hi guys
i was wonderin what is the whole thing with freshwater clams?
are they beneficial to a aquarium?
what do they need to thrive?
are they difficult to keep?

all i know is that they're horrible for water quality when they die. maybe people just don't notice that they're dead so they decompose more than a dead fish does because they're removed quicker. try googling it. or searching the archives, i have read a post about this before.
