hi. new to this so bear with me.
my localk garden centre has started selling fresh water puffers. They say they are suitable for all tropical tanks. but know very little else about them.
Are they hybrids or just bred to exist in this type of tank?
Are they suitable for any fish tank or fish.
I have three tanks, a gourami 4ft tank, a 3ft livebearer tank and a 3ft general mix of fish.
thanx for any help

1 ) do you have a very clear picture of what this puffer looks like? then go to http://www.pufferlist.com/ and see if you can't figure out what type (or types) of puffer it may be.

2 ) they're lying to you. no puffer should ever be kept with anything you wouldn't mind horribly mauled or eaten. while several species can be kept with sucker catfish, even that is a risk and sometimes backfires.

3 ) there are several "freshwater" puffers that should really be kept in brackish or light marine aquariums. but we'll cross that bridge when you think you've got an ID for the puffers you saw.

4 ) any further inquiries should really be posted in Oddball's

thats beside the point, pretty much all fresh water puffer species are very aggressive and can not be kept with any other specie except their own. even the dwarf puffers are very aggressive, iv seen a trio of dwarfs gang bang a tank full of oscars at my lfs, it was awful. perhaps u can approach the manager of this store and persuade him to change the sighn by the fish, all i can see is alot of people buying these fish thinking they are so cool (because they are) and ending up with a tank full of dead fish the next day.
