Folks,

Thanks to some really interesting comments at the brackish side of this forum, I've been able to update the pufferfish Brackish Aquarium FAQ significantly.

I'd like to do the same for the freshwater soles. Since buying one a few months ago, I've been frustrated by the lack of hard data, not to mention a lot of data that is downright contradictory. I'm not even sure which species I have. By the shape, provenance, and fin spine counts I'm fairly sure it's a Brachirus species, possibly Brachirus harmandi.

Anyway, I'd really like to hear from people who have kept freshwater soles, in particular things like which species they had, what it fed on, what salinity they maintained it at, and so on. You can read the existing entry at the link below, and of course please do send on corrections or comments.

The FAQ has been around for a good ten years now, and has benefitted from the contributions of numerous aquarists. Additions to the FAQ are always credited. I can also add a contributor's e-mail or web site address to a particular section, if that is desired.

Thanks!

Neale

I have a Brachirus species sole, probably B.salinarum but difficult to say really. Seems to be thriving in brackish water with a SG of 1.005 and feeds readily on mysis shrimp and frozen bloodworm. Growth has been slower than expected with about 1" growth in 8 months.

Interesting. According to two Australian friends who regularly collect fish, this species is only seen in freshwater, and is believed (according to G R Allen of the Western Australian Museum) to complete its entire life cycle in freshwater.

There is another Australian sole, Synaptura nigra, that is marine/brackish and distinct from Synaptura salinarum. I wonder if you have that one?

Or else, is this one of those times where the optimal conditions for a fish in captivity aren't the same as those in the wild (cf. figure-8 puffer).

Cheers,

Neale
