I have been a fan of feeding cyclops for many years. When I first began using this food there was developed engineered population of them in one lake in Canada, The product was sold under the brand name Cyclop-eeze. It was available in two forms- freeze dried and frozen. I started with the freeze dried. However, my main use for this food was feeding new pleco fry.
The problem with feeding the freeze dried is that it did not sink very well. So I switched to the frozen and it worked great. It was almost a super food for fry and smaller fish in general. It was a very popular brand. And then disaster hit. The cyclops in the lake had been engineered to be high quality food and it was. The disaster was that the population crashed,
In the end, it was lost never to be replaced. Fortunately, cyclops are available from other sources, just not as good quality as the Cyclop-eeze. So I continued buying cyclops in bulk until the past year or so. It became difficult to find them and when I did they were only available in cubes and I needed to be buying it in 1pound slabs. It was totally uneconomical to buy what I needed in cubes when I could get them.
So I switched to using rotifers. I have been ram0ping down my breeding of plecos to the point where I have only a single species left. I have cut my tank count in half. But this past week I received another shipment of frozen food from Jehmco. I got a few slabs of rotifers and smaller size mysis shrimp. I still have plenty of frozen brine as well as some of the larger mysis. I also have to buy more Repashy. After frozen it is my choice for quality food.
So, if you can find cyclops in a volume that you need, I would tell you to go for it. The Cyclop-eeze has been gone for years now and I still miss it.
