ok, here's the deal. my LFS, bless their souls, is generally pretty good but i have suspicions about their betta-keeping abilities. i stopped by today and happened to notice this beautiful complete-cellophane VT male. he's got a touch of red at the base of his caudul and a thin streak down the center of his tail. i'm not an expert by any measure, but it looks like it could be scepticemia.

i can't take in another betta; i'm not satisfied with housing arrangements for my current one as it is. but i have a half-hex 5 gallon tank with light that i need to get rid of, as well as several plant clippings and a bunch of gravel (sorry, i'm using the filter).

if there is anybody in Birmingham, AL who would like to meet me somewhere next Tuesday afternoon and get a free betta and the start of a filterless planted 5g, please let me know. (SRC and jacblades would get first dibs, because I know they're real human beings and not scary stalker internet people. sorry.)

he really is a beauty. aside from the red that i think is scepticemia, he's just a perfect translucent white.

I am full up or I would...I barely have time for the ones I've got now (since I started school), and I doubt I would be able to properly care for a sick one right now (hopefuly none of mine get sick now lol).

I know how you feel. Well, unless Jac wants it, he's up for grabs. I just need to hear before Monday, b/c that's the last day I'll have to go back and get him.

my guess would be to use colloidal silver. as far as i know, it's the betta magic bullet.

this is a copy of an article wuv once sent me :
Miracle Cure all? Could it be?

Yes, it could,. I’d like to share with everybody, my experiences with colloidal silver. Colloidal silver is a natural substance consisting of submicroscopic clusters of silver suspended in a colloid of water. Silver has long been one of the greatest destroyers of bacteria. It was soon forgotten due to the increasing cost of silver during and after the depression, so an alternative was invented and penicillin soon filled it’s shoes, although it doesn‘t hold a candle to silver and it‘s benefits.

Scientific research has proven silver to kill and destroy 650+ strains of bacteria ,fungi and virus‘ within 6 minutes of coming in contact with the germ. It‘s still used today in hospitals worldwide to treat the fragile skin of burn victims and it’s put into the eyes of newborns to destroy bacteria and avoid infection.. Since it’s a natural mineral it cannot be patented, so it’s no longer ‘prescribed’ . Silver works as a catalyst, disabling the enzyme that all one celled bacteria ,virus and fungi use for their oxygen metabolism and they quickly suffocate.

“Ok, that’s good...but aren’t we supposed to be talking bettas?”
Of course ,always .
I’ve been using silver on my bettas for years and I have seen astounding results!! I’ve brought home fish who were at death’s door and watched as they miraculously recovered before my eyes. I’ve seen over excited males bust their caudal fin and awoke to fish who were ‘good as new’. Silver is well known for causing major growth stimulation in damaged tissue.
I use silver directly in spawn tanks and I have a 98% survival rate, which proves to me it has no harsh effects on even the tiniest of betta. I’ve also never seen a ventral-less fry so I would assume that the silver destroys the accused bacteria on the bottom of the tank.. It would work very well in drip systems for extra protection against a disease outbreak.

Silver is nothing but beneficial to every living things besides a single celled pathogen.

I’ve recommended silver to my fair share of people and I usually hear “But isn’t that for people?” or “isn’t that expensive?”. The answers are yes and possibly yes. People can use it too and it is found in health food stores. And when you add up how much you’ve spent on over the counter meds to kill a super strain of bacteria/fungi, it’s really not that expensive at all.
Silver can be purchased in a wide range of ppm’s from 10-2,000. I suggest 500 PPM, it’s perfect. At 500 ppm you get the equivalent in one dropper that you would get in an entire two ounce bottle of 50 ppm. It’s worth the higher price because it lasts longer and it’s stronger. Right now I’m using 1,100 ppm. I put 5 drops in a 5 gallon bucket of aging water every two weeks, just to give you the idea of concentration differential. I use it every few weeks because trace amounts protect and strengthen the immune system.
You really can’t go wrong or overdose. I’ve used silver directly in large aquaria with no change in my readings. This is because silver does not attack beneficial bacteria. Only the bad bacteria. ~ Kelly Macomber

oh, and it looks like the betta is actually a "white pastel".

Does the fish look like this?

yes, but no blue on the fins that i could notice. all i know is that it looked like a cellophane but very white instead of flesh-toned, with black eyes and the aforementioned red streaks.

I've found Interpret's Anti-Internal Bacterial med works well on septaceamia, as well as clean water and good food.

soz cant get it just realised you meant birmingham in america, sorry :)
 i just knew that somebody was going to do that! ;) its no problem demon.

if you're sure that your boyfriend can get him Karah's mommy, then i'll go get him tomorrow as soon as my roomate leaves ;) what she won't know won't hurt her and she'll be so excited to see that i got rid of that empty 5g :p however, i really can't take care of this betta if no one else can adopt him, so if you could give me a definite yes/no that'd be awesome.
