....How can I keep it??

lol

I have an extra 10 gal laying around. Plus a filter and a heater....This guy is REALLY neat, and so far away from water! (we have had a lot of rain though)

He is one of the biggest crayfish I have seen 8 inches nose to tail...

Help me keep this guy. He would be a really neat addition to the family!

Thanks so much!!

Agreed, need a pic. And if its 8 inches it will need more than a 10 g.

Drew

Here ya go!

Taken with my cell phone. :( Sorry, it's all I have.

Well, it lost a pincher today when I checked on it at lunch.

I used to keep hermit crabs, and know that the limbs will grow back. Do yall just think it's stress? Is he molting??

What do they eat? What kind of substrate do they like?

sorry? could you tell we what a common Crayfish is???? i have come across may types of them but never seen a common.

@Yarra the pic is still too small to identify the critter. can i ask where you live? if you can give me a better shot, perhaps of the head, i could give you a proper id. there is every chance the critter will be ok in a 10g for now, however 20g is the size i would normally recommend for any cray. there is a good chance you will not need a heater, but a Cray really needs a mature tank, so you will need to do lots of water changes till your tank is about six months cycled. if you are going to keep it, can i say give it lots of places to hide, caves, tubes half plant pots are good. avoid live plants, they love to destroy them. ensure your tank has a tight fitting lid. all Cray need well oxygenated water, so i would say a spray bar, or putting the outlet of your filter above the water line. add a bit of bog wood too, cray benefit from the tannins that they can release. they are not carnivores, as people tend to think, but omnivorous, when younger they tend to go for protein foods, meat and fish. as they age they move more to the veg side. but most Cray will eat whatever you put in the tank.
