:( this is so depressing, our 10 year old budgie has been puffing up all week but we assumed it was since the weather was getting chilly and he did it every year.

well now he is at the bottom of the cage, breathing very hard, is not eating/drinking when we try hand feeding him, has his eyes closed at all times and last week he hurt his leg but after a few days he seemed back to normal.

oh god please help me if you have any knowledge of birds

we put him in a box with a light to help warm him up and a little box like nest so he can hide from the heat. he is not moving but just breathing hard. we put some water in a very shallow bowl/cup and spread bird seed around.

can we do anything else?

P.S: i know this should be in the other pets section but this is an emergency and i know this is a fish website but there are a significant amount of less bird forums out there. i know you guys will see it more here.

please have a heart and help

oh gosh... YOu need to take him to an avian vet ASAP! if you dont know of one in your area look here! http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup/ I am an avian enthusiest and he is sick...well what way did he hurt his foot? like sprain it or cut? what kind of diet is he on? have you used teflon pans in the house or created any fumes that couldve blocked his air way? sorry im just trying to think of what it is...

I agree you need to take him to a vet. He could have an infection in his lungs or at 10 years he is pretty old for a budgie.
Please let us know how he gets on.

donno, if you guys found out or not, but its too late,

he passed away the night i posted this. but i guess it was for the best since he was suffering.

now were left with his g/f budgie and we dont know what to dfo with her.

i know they live in flocks but can we keep her alone? shes 4 years old and pretty energetic and even without him she still sings when were around or the tv/radio is on B)

She'll be fine on her own, just keep her with plenty of toys and spend as much time with her as you can. Budgies actually make excellent single birds so long as you're willing to spend the time with them.

alright nice, think theres anything chance she can actually start talking/mimiking now that shes alone.

never had a talking brid but my cousin had his budgie saying all kinds of stuff, :good:

I've got three of them together (two males, one female) and my younger male is starting to talk at 8-9 months old. He's mastered syllables, but he hasn't formed an actual word yet. It'll be interesting when he does.... :)

Females aren't as likely to talk, but they can. Talk to her constantly, reward her for anything that sounds like talking, and it's possible. They have very quiet, high-pitched, and fast speech, so listen closely to her when she is making utterances...sometimes they talk and we don't notice because it IS so high-pitched and fast.

:/ sorry about your budgie..you did your best and that was a long life!

I lost a male about 12 months ago and was left with his young girlfriend and she is fine. Then about the same time some stupid woman was outside in the street with a budgie in a cage. I said mind it dont get run over (cage in road) she said dont care if it does you have it...I told her not to joke she said take it or I will open the door and let it out. The poor green budgie was and still is traumatised. Scared of its own shadow, holds its wing in its claw, wont eat any tit bits at all, and pings the bars. So that made 2 budgies in 2 separate cages, and then my Mum died February and I have her boy as well, and he can say 13 phrases, and sounds just like mum talking. He is now talking like me as well and has my whistle exactly. If I walk past his cage he goes "OK?" but this one was a hand reared one we got specially. sorry am rambling now.

Liz, about your budgie sounding like your mum, that's actually really cool, like hearing her again. I liked hearing about that, I'd never thought of that before.

Love to you, I'm sorry about your mum :-(
