Just thought it would be interesting to have a bit of a football banter/discussion thread for any football fans on here, I posted it in GC as the sports board is dead, and I am referring to football (soccer), and not hand egg (American football ;) )

Who do you support?

I'm a Derby County fan, hence the display picture, I've been a season ticket holder for the past 5 years, and sometimes go to away games, though Forest and Leicester away are always ones which I attend, nothing beats a local derby!

ps. keep it civil please!

Liverpool supporter here :yahoo: I play occasionally, myself. Every weekend or whenever they need me. I own 17 Caps. Yes 17! -Don't get jealous-..It gets trickier, each and every-time, I play! When I do run down the wing, they seem to fall off..And thats when the alarm bell goes off :X

Seriously though lol..Yes, A Liverpool supporter here, there has a been a few interesting hands that have been delt in the transfer window. It'll be good to see how they get played, through-out the Premier league. Roll on next Season :D

YES Football..I love it! I love it with a passion :D Besides watching/following your own team, do any of you guys watch any European league football ? Or MLS for that matter

im a Newcastle fan, so have to put up with far too much ridiculous crap, things that shouldnt even be an issue get turned into colossal cluster#59###s on the tyne.

getting relegated was a good thing, clearing out the deadwood and giving hughton the job was a good thing. then we sacked him, i thought it was a bad move then. pardew has done no worse, but he hasnt really done any better either. selling carrol - one one hand, we sold one of only 2 guys in our team scoring any goals, on the other hand we got 35 million for a player worth about 15 tops. who we get in this summer will determine if the carrol deal was good business. we were left woefully short up front for the last half of the season, though its not like carrol played much anyway after january.

more worrying is the monumental cock-up were making or re-signing nolan and barton. our 2 best players last year, and the board wont pull their fingers out to resign them. what a joke. enrique seems to be on the way out, another of our best performers. we have just brought a newly capped french international from Lille, who won the french league last year, but for the last 10 years newcastle have ignored the area they're weakest - defence. Taylor hasnt turned into the england CB he could have been, and despite being an argentinian international, coloccini looks suspect a lot of the time. if enrique goes, we'll have a weak defence. we signed ben arfa while his leg was broken, and i think he could have made a big difference to our season had that dirty man city player not crippled him. even if we re-sign barton and nolan, and keep enrique, we still need 2 forwards, a RB, and a CB minimum. but still, the new french guy is a midfielder, i think.

as for the rest of the league, im in norfolk so norwich are my local team, i shall be trying to get down to carrow road to watch what i can, but Norwich's games are sell out every matchday, regardless of what league they're in. the season ticket waiting list is years long, and a large majority of the stadium is season ticket only. i will at least definitely see newcastle there, my mate gives me his season ticket when he cant go, or when newcastle play down here. i will be trying to get in the away stand though.

i predict arsenal will crumble again, like they always do. they will lose at least one big player this year, and if they're lucky bendtner will go, hes crap. torres will come good, but chelsea will have to rethink the way they play to revolve around him rather then drogba. getting a new manager in is a good way to do this. if youre lucky, mourinho will still keep trying to sign lampard and get him, so i dont have to watch him on motd anymore. man city will spend loads of money on players that cant play together, and sell the ones that have been there long enough to have a team bond. they are the new graveyard for players, go to man city as a youngster and guarantee yourself years of bench sitting as more expensive players are brought every transfer window. i hope man city fail miserably.

man utd will win the league again, they managed to win with a crap team this year, next year they will be better. its about time they cleared out some crap players. im looking forward to smalling and jones devloping the future england CB pairing. ive been very impressed with smalling since watching the england U21's at carrow road last year, he was phenomenal. the stand out player. liverpool, its great that they want to buy young english, but you have to spend far too much money for what you're getting, and keep buying young and you risk turning into the nearly men, like arsenal. will be nice to see Stevie G kick a ball again.

harder to predict the relegated teams than champions, i hope norwich stay up, but they still have largely the same team they won league 1 with 2 years ago, so i dont think it would be embarrasing for them.

quite a long post i know, i have quite a lot to say about football. particuarly the deluded owner of newcastle.

I honestly think next year that Liverpool or Man City will win the league, if Liverpool had Kenny Dalglish from the start of the season they could have run away with it, Man City will be spending big again, I've heard Kaka, Ronaldo, Aguero all linked with them, it's only when the UEFA fair play rules come into play that they'll be at a massive disadvantage.

liverpool could never have won this year, they simply dont have the quality i dont think. they obviously intend on having carrol and snachez as the main men. to make the most of carrol they need 2 wingers. the closest liverpool have to a recognised winger is joe cole, and we all know how well his liverpool move has gone. they are close though. i still think chelsea and man utd will be the top 2, liverpool man city and arsenal will all be battling eachother to catch them. man city get linked with every player worth over 25 million every year, so far they jave been a bit hit and miss in the market. the more money they've spent, the less impressive their signings have been. dzeko has been rubbish, but we should give him a season to prove himself. balotelli is good, but verging on being more of a liability than an asset. adam johnson doesnt play enough either. im hoping micah richards holds down a place, we need somebody to replace glen johnson in the england team ASAP. Ronaldo wont come back to england unless its back to man utd. as much as i dont like him, i do appreciate a certain amount of loyalty he gave to man utd. he didnt announce his desire to leave and then strop till he got his move, Fergie asked him to stay another year then he could go. he did, he kept quiet about the move, played well, then gave utd an 80 million leaving present.

i find man city a bit dull to watch. they play with 3 defensive central midfielders, yet have all the money in the world to go and buy plyers that can unlock the best defences with one flick of the ball, one turn or one pass.

SOUTHAMPTON!!!!
They will be in the premiership after next season

That wouldn't surprise me if I'm honest, it's where they belong, just like Derby.

I'll take the bait..who are the 3 defensive central midfielders that City play with?

Forest fan here!! :good:

*goes back under rock

Oh dear Ian

I've just heard that McLaren has been appointed as your manager by 5Live.

yaya toure, de jong and barry.

barry's form has dipped massively since moving from villa. i'll admit toure does have sprinklings of attack mindedness, but hes not exactly ronaldo, or kaka, or fabregas, or gerrard, or messi. and de jong is just a dirty player. how he avoided a red card in the world cup final after karate kicking alonso in the chest i dont know. its just that city could afford somebody of the quality i mentioned above, but either dont want it, or havnt been able to persuade the top tier players to join. tevez is head and shoulders above the rest of the squad as their stand out player, hes phenomenal. maybe now they have CL football the 'proper superstar' players will join.

The only one in your list of 3 who is a defensive midfielder is De Jong, the other two are 'box to box' players...Yaya is what the Italians call a regista (deep lying playmaker is the closest translation I can find). The same as your new player Cabaye, box to box midfielder not a defensive midfielder also a very good young player, let's see how he copes with the English league.

Of course Yaya is not exactly like Ronaldo and Messi, they are inside forwards and play on the opposite foot (or wingers with a free role if you like) Kaka, well what team wouldn't want him (if he's recovered from his operation..same as Gerrard)

What can we say about Tevez....pain in the whatsit off the field but I can ignore that as long as he still gives 100% on the field!

I think Silva will be one to watch next season, been a fantastic player last season and if he can be persuaded to shoot will get a bagfull next season. Same with Dzeko and Balotelli (I expect more Balotelli hat-tricks next season...2 goals and a red card ;-))

Of course I have a different outlook on football as I'm not listening to Sky Sports and not reading the Sky Four press, as I live in South America and they a 'neutral' outlook on City and I've yet to hear any complaints about how much money the owner has and how they are ruining football whilst fielding 6 players for England against Switzerland.

Barry's form may have dipped as he as other things on his mind... allegedly.

i completely see your point about how toure plays, but im not so convinced Barry has anything to offer going forward. i just think if they had a CM who did very little in the way of defending, they would be far more potent, and much less boring to watch. silva was impressive, id like to see him and johnson playing wide, de jong and toure in the middle and this more attack minded player i keep on about in the middle with them. with the quality city have/will buy soon, against the majority of teams they can afford to have a midfielder not pulling his defensive weight. scholes done it for the last 20 years, and Zidane reckons hes the best player of his generation. and it didnt exactly stop his team winning

a good exmaple of this is taraabt (if thats how you spell it) at QPR this year. he gets free reign to do what he wants when he wants. QPR had enough quality to dominate the championship all year, they could afford to have one player not 'sticking to the plan' as such. reading an interview with the QPR boss, he was telling his team not to pass the ball to taraabt if he wasnt in the opposing half, his team mates didnt expect him to defend or tackle back, and always assumed he was going to drive on forward and shoot or create chances. now they've been promoted, they've got to think differently about how they use him. but this is what man city can afford to do against most, weaker teams, have a floating, highly skilled offensive midfielder who doesnt have to track back with the rest of the midfield.

as for cabaye, i know very little about him, nothing that i havnt read in the paper. but hes got to be better than some players we were using last year, so its a good thing. if we can get barton and nolan to stay on, with guiterrez and ben arfa on the wings and tiote in the middle, thats a very decent midfield. just need a 10 million + forward to lead the line.
