Well, I went home after work and I opened the lid to give my fish some food and out jumps my Gourami. I fasted them for 3/4 of a day on Sunday, so I guess he was really excited to get some food. We have a couch right next to the fishtank and when he jumped out he perfectly wedged himself between the armrest and the couch cushion. Needless to say he was not moving around so much at this moment. He is fine, so all is good. I really didn't expect him to go flying out of the tank though.
I had seen one of them hop up just a little when I opened the lid to give them food before, but they didn't jump enough to clear the aquarium. And yes, I do feed them 2-3 times a day, so they are not starved. An interesting happening for the beginning of my second month into fishkeeping.

LOL  - these things can happen...

Never had one jump completley out but one evening heard a loud bang....

...had a good look at all the fish and noticed one of the rainbows had a big chunk missing out the top of his head  and was going a bit skittish round the tank.... then he just held position.

What caused this?....not 100% sure but can only assume is was one of the two metal bracing bars going across the width of the tank to hold the sides in (this is a 5' tank) and that he had severly brained himself on this :X  :S

....I thought this looks pretty nasty and didn't really fancy his odds of making to the end of the week (or even tomorrow :-( )

....Well the good news is he did make it, treated with a bit of topical antibacterial to prevent secondry infections and today (4-5 months later) you wouldn't know anything had happened to him apart from a slight indentation across the top of his head :/

....just goes to show how tough some of them are.....

:)

when my teacher gave me a bronze cory, i didn't have a fish tank, so put him in a critter tank about 1.5 gallon and i didn't have any water conditioner and stuff all i fed her was bread.... lol and she was so darn scared of me! and in the morning i caould see her in her tank jumping!!!!she won't even move when i came near her then after 2 months, i put her in my turtle tank (because she would have a bigger place to live... my turtle was chasing her all over the tank then my little bronzy found a cave which my turts r scared to go so my bronze is safe.... so i left the cory in ther for another week soon i was saying to myself.... how cruel of me to do that to my fish so i brought another 10 gallon tank and i brought fishes for him to play with unfortuattly he was still scared of me and he was scared of my red tail shark..... then i brought an albino cory so he would have some friends and now she's not that scared of me anymore.... :hyper:

That was just a little story of mine :p

Well, he did it again. I went to feed them again and the Gourami jumped out. I think it was the same one. I hope he learns. I think I will have to dump a little food in the back first before I open the lid and give him the chance to jump out. It only happens before the food gets dropped in. Otherwise, he won't bother. He must like food quite a bit.

i was at my lfs the other week and as i walked past one of the tanks their 6 inch kissing gourami jumped out....i think he was tryin to follow me lol

anywway i picked him up n put him back into the tank n apart from a few little cuts he's okay now :D

Well, one day I decided to scrub the algae off of one of my aquarium ornaments cuz it was pretty green and nothin' eating it at the time. My dad gave it to me for my tank he had made it when he was a teenager and it had lots of holes in it for the fish. (not entirely sure it is aquarium safe, but its been there for several years and no problems yet) So, I took it downstairs and put it in the utility sink. Turned the water on and... holy cr*p! My kuhli loach comes flyin' out of it and hits the side of the sink! I managed to cover up the drain before he went down it. He was in there for a pretty long time before I could catch him, I would say two minutes or so. Eventually I managed to get him in a glass of water and took him back up to the tank. He seemed unhurt except for a little scrape on his side. thought he might not live the poor guy, but he did. That was a toughie. Unfortunately, he went up the filter intake tube a few weeks later... :-(

Yeah my 6 inch Moonlight Gourami has jumped out twice!! Keep a close eye on him afterwards and look for anything differant while swiming. Internal orgrans can be damaged from the drop on the floor.

If your gourami keep jumping out to the tank, how were you able to clean your tank when you need to?

I hope it is not a regular thing you have to deal with.

Lipreader,

All should be fine when I clean. He only gets super hyper when he sees me and they have not been fed. They know when I am going to feed them, so this one especially is happy as heck. He thinks its his last dinner or something. Makes me wonder if I am feeding them to little, when they are this pumped up. He is real quick to jump out. He will not jump out once the food hits the water and he sees it, but between the time I lift the top and put the flake in, he is trying to set a record for the long jump. I have been feeding them where there is a little hold by my heater first. Once they see it and start eating, I then open up the hood and give them the rest. That works fine.
Also, I have cleaned once already and had no problems. He just has an obsession with food. Most likely, I will feed them some before I do cleaning.

one of my pearl angels has this habit. fortunatly he has never made it past the tank boundries, but he will clear the water entirely jumping at my hand to get the food.
