flying foxes

hi! long time no see. So my empty ten gallon is geting over grown with algae, and my pleco in my forty doesnt seem to get all the algae in that tank (little plants etc) SO I wanted more ottos(i already have three in my 25 gallon and they are GREAT lil housekeepers) but none of my lfs have them. They do have flying foxes tho. i have been told before on this forum that fox would make a good alternative to the ottos.
So before i go get em any suggestions? for the ten? for the 40? the 10 is empty and the 40 has 9 malawi cichlid and a pleco. Will they be ok? how many should i get? Is there Thanks in advance.

True flying foxes dont eat algae.
Maybe the have them confused with regular algae eaters?

hmm dunno why they would have suggested them =[ So any suggestions of a small algae eater thats good with a community? So far i see bristlenose pleco (5 inch) TIA

Yea prolly a bristle nose, or some sorta dwarf pleco maybe.
Ottos still ur best choice tho lol

hmmthey dont have bristles either =[ hehe they do have sailfin so i may grab one or two of those. =]

True siamese flying fox prefer to be in groups of 3-4 anyway. They grow very large and would not have been suitable for a ten gallon anywyay. Neither would the Chinese algae eaters, they are litle terrors and grow to a very latge size.

Snails or otos i would suggest, but then only otos if it is an established tank.

I'm quite new to all this but I bought 4 fox's (1 died on the way home??) and the 3 I have cleared up the algae very quickly and are great fun to watch!! I didn't want to get them as I thought they were ugly, they are now my fvourite fish in the tank!

flying foxes do eat algae, this guy is a maniac he's constantly zinging around the tank stripping it of all the nasty stuff.

definatly eats hair algae and that dense fluffy dark green stuff. doesn't eat staghorn algae though (looking at the back wall of my tank, it's pearling. ha ha)

siamese algae eaters are not flying foxes. siamese ones are monsters and attack tank mates when adult. siamese flying foxes dont exist (except in the imagination of the guy labeling at the LFS)

the thing to look for is the yellow lateral line above the black one. if you see the yellow one (like the pic below) get one and see how it goes. i only have one so not sure is you can keep more but he's happy as a pig in er pig mess..
