Flying foxes

:D true flying foxes do eat alot of algae,
although there are closely related imposters such as the siemese alqae eater, and chinease algae eater
make sure you know who you have ;)

Siamese algae eaters or Siamese flying foxes also eat a hell of a lot of algae and are just as good a tank mate as the true flying fox. but be very careful of the CAE's as they are really aggressive when mature

If you mean this fish-Flying Fox (Epalzeorhynchus kallopterus)

Epalzeorhynchus_kallopterus.jpg

This fish is like other Cyprinids, they will eat more than others but less than others. They aren't good algae eaters but they will eat a little. If you are looking for an Algae Eater the SAE or Siamese Flying Fox (Crossocheilus siamensis) is the best option.

Mine is either a flying fox or siamese algae eater. It's dorsal fin has a yellow color to it if that helps. It's only 1/2 inch bigger than my ottos so it isn't full grown yet.

The Flying Fox with a sharp black line and gold band above it on a dark brown background is the one known to become aggressive, they will eat a little algae but not alot. The Siamese Flying Fox has an serrated black line on a light grey background, the black line goes all the way to the bottom of the tail, and they only have one set of barbels compared to the Flying Foxes which have two, these are very good algae eaters and need to be kept in a group, they both reach similar sizes but the Siamese Flying Fox is less aggressive and eats more algae.

Sorry I forgot these guys weren't catfish. :*) I was tired last night
No worries dwarf. Happens to me to.

I have two flying foxes, (kalopterus), which were both the same size when bought. One has become ENORMOUS compared to the other but I guess this is just pecking order. They get along fine most of the time but the larger one will chase the smaller around the bogwood at break-neck speeds!! The speed and agility is amazing, as is the braking power they demonstrate. Beats my ABS!

:) :) :) :) !!

I agree that the flying fox(Epalzeorhynchus kalopterus) is a great fish (see my avatar ;) ). I got mine when he was quite small, and he's about 4-5 inches now, and really beautiful.

^ This site describes all the different types, and allows easy identification.

They are really fast (when they want to be), but they are really fascinating :) Mine tends to stay in his rock cave most of the day, and become more active when the tank lights go out at night. HE eats a little algae off of the rocks, but not huge amounts. Only trouble ive had from it is when i added my betta to the tank and they surprised each other, leading to some nipping. But i just took my betta back out again. the flying fox gets on well with my three-line cories, and doesnt even notice the neons
