I have 3 flying foxes in my community tank. I have just read an article that says I should only have one in a community tank as they are aggressive towards each other. My Lfs told me to buy at least 3 to keep each other company?? Who is right? They have been in my tank for a few weeks and seem to get on fine. -_-

I've got two in my community tank and they're fine... not aggressive at all. They are friends B)

my lfs said I should get more than one aswell - for company.

Have you got the Flying Fox (Epalzeorhynchus kalopterus) which has two sets of barbels and a gold stripe running down the length of its body? Or do you have Siamese Algae Eater or Siamese Flying Fox (Crossocheilos siamensis) these have one set of barbels and a single black line running down their body?

Epalzeorhynchus kalopterus are territorial amoungst they're own species and other similar looking Cyprinids. They will graze on algae to a certain extent but not like Crossocheilos siamensis which prefers to be in groups and does a good job on algae in the aquarium.

As Ryan says, FF's get territorial and will squabble with their own kind and other fish that resemble them. The behaviour gets worse with age and size, and can totally disrupt a tank in bad cases.
