I have just got myself a fluval 404.

I took off the 160 biowheel, and the Dynaflow 2 (like an AQ 150 with cartriges not foam, and carbon bags). And I can't hear a thing, freaks me out sorta I have to check and see if it's still working.

It came with 4 bags of activated carbon, and 4 bags of the Bio Max pipes. What else would you reccomend using along with this? Should I have carbon, ammonia chips and bio max pipes or replace one with peat?

I want a planted aquarium in the long run. This is for my 20 gallon at the moment, but as soon as a stand for my 130 gallon finds me I can go crazy.

Cheers.

All I can tell ya is what is in all of my fluvals....
I have the bio pipe things, filter floss, bio-balls and seachem purigen inserts for the tannin from the wood....these seem to work fine for me.

A 404 on a 20? Crazy! lol....Good luck with the stand finding business by the way  :D

I use filter floss in the bottom basket and bio-media in the rest. If I used carbon I would put that in the top basket. Ammonia chips don't do anything your natural biofilter won't, so they are pointless.

I have a Fluval 304 and 204. Both have filter floss in the lower, carbon in the middle, and those bio pipe thingys in the top. IMO, the filter floss is a good idea for mechanical filtration.... you'd be amazed at how dirty it gets in a couple weeks. And because of that, the water sparkles!

for my fluval 404

I use pre filter on the bottom baskets (2 of) (its pretty much like bio max except smaller holes and designed for pre filtering), The middle baskets (4 of) polywool (filter floss) and the top baskets (2 of) I use bio max
