Hi all,

Hope this is the correct area to post this question. One of my tank is a Fluval Duo made by Hagen. It features a black plastic hood with the lighting unit built into it. There are two tubes and hence to two starter units are plugged into it. Today the light failed and so I checked the starters, only to find the socket that one fits into has fallen to pieces.

I have contacted the only local LFS I could find open and they have been no help as they no longer sell this brand of tank. Am I not sure what the part is called and if it is standard or not? I wonder if any other Hagen/Fluval owners could help me out here?

It's a small circle of thin plastic that holds the two wires that connect to the starter when it is plugged in and twisted slightly, hope that makes sense!

I have tried searching online for replacements but I have only found tubes and complete starter units.

Thanks,
Kev

You may be better off buying an electronic ballast which doesn't require starters.

If you have the Fluval Duo 800 which is 2x18W You would buy a 36W ballast.

The remove the old magnetic one from the recess in your hood. install the new one.

Cut the wires that are connected to your old ballast and fit them to the new one.

Alternatively you could buy a Hagen Glomat twin external starter for your tube wattage cut the end caps off.
Feed the cables through the hole that currently has the power cord going through it.
Cut the wires leading to your hood end caps and re-connect to the starter units cables either by twist and tape or with proper connectors.

If you prefer the electronic ballast idea then you could ask this chap but the glomat starter idea would be easier and probably about the same price.
