I just bought a secondhand Fluval 305 and I noticed taht you can't change the direction of the outlet nozzle. Like most tanks the holes in the lid for pipes and cables are at the back of the tank, so with the fluval outlet nozzle it means that the flow would be front to back at the shortest distance. What I would like is the flow to be along the widest part of the aquarium (left to right). Is there a was of adapting the outlet in any way to change direction? I really don't want to be cutting holes in the lid of my tank.

Cheers

Angela

Although the initial flow will be 'back to front', If the inlet is positioned at the opposite end of the tank then the water will need to flow in that direction anyway, regardless of what position the outlet head is in.

Hmmmm...........the manual is very poor in actually telling you where to position it, however it would seem that the bit I assumed hooks over the edge of the tank doesn't, and I am missing a couple of hose elbows whic allows the outlet to go into the tank and it can them be directed across the tank. That probably doesn't make sense but I think I know what to do now!!!

there should be 2 U shaped brackets that fit over the tank with a sucker on each to hold the inlet and outlet in place, the bendy/flexi pipe then sits inside the bracket as it can be bent in any direction.

Yeah I just figured that - I don't have them! Looks like I'll have to buy some!

Another question - is it possible to get a venturi effect with the outlet? I don't have an airstone in my tank because the filters I use have a venturi on them, I was just wondering how to ensure good oxygenation with the 305?

Cheers

Confused  I have the Fluval 305 and I can direct the outlet to flow along the long length of my tank. In fact I can twist the outlet to go in any direction I like.

Yes I've worked it out - I was missing 2 vital peices, which was confusing me! Don't suppose you can tell me if you can the venturi effect for oxygenation?

I also have a 305 and find it excellent.

You could easily drill a hole in the airline and fit a bit of airline to get the effect...but why bother?

Venturi effects are very ineffective for oxygenation IME, and usually just slow the flow-rate of the filter so could potentially make it worse.

You shouldn't need to have any extra oxygenation anyway, unless you are very highly stocked, or have an awkwardly shaped deep aquarium (like a large bowl), the water will already be pretty much saturated with oxygen, and adding more "oxygenation" in the form of air pumps or venturis wont do anything to increase the oxygen.

The most effective way of oxygenating the water (if you actually need to) is to put the outlet of the filter above the water so it splashes back in IMO.

I appreciate that the way to ensure oxygenation is to ensure that the surface of the water is disturbed and venturi valves on filters do that very well, far better than airstones in my opinion. I know it slows down the flow but I always have 2 filters in the tank anyway as a precaustion, so am always over filtered. I just prefer the venturi effect because it's quieter!

As I understood it the outlet has to go under the surface of the watre - maybe I have to go back and re-read the manual.

I have some fish that need high levels of oxygen and are cared for at high temps, so need to consider how best to maintain oxygen levels. Thanks

You could always get a spray bar and direct it at the surface for better surface aggitation.

Good idea bricko............do they sell them specifically for the 305? If not anyone got any ideas what might fit?

Yes they do, about £10 got one on my 305.

Feabay is probably cheaper though
