Hi,

This may seem like a stupid question (and maybe it is) but I was wondering how to safely stop the canister without getting water everywhere. The last time I I tried, I unplugged it and just went straight to open it up. I pulled off one clip at the side, and it started spraying water so I quickly snapped it back into place. I forgot to put the safety on the intake/outtake hoses when I set it up though, so the intake hose popped off when I snapped it back and it started pouring water all over my floor. I panicked at first but quickly pulled the intake part out of the tank. Ended up with about 5 gallons of water on my floor. Wasn't happy but could have been worse. I learned from my mistake though.

So what is the correct way to do this? Do you turn it off and then lift the intake out of the tank? Surely there is a better way to do it then this.

Thank you,

Connor

?

Does your filter not have the stop leaver? You pull it up and it stops the water and keeps the vacuum. Then you pull the second one to release the hoses from the can?

1) Un-plug
2) Lift Aqua-stop Quick release leaver
3) Remove hoses from filter unit
4) Remove filter unit to sink for cleaning

When you return, lift both hoses out of the water and drain them. Re-fit the hoses and lower the Aquastop leaver, before sucking on the return side. Once full plug in. The "self start" is a nice novelty while it lasts, but after a while you just pump away with nothing doing... Welcome the wonderful world of Fluval exturnals...

The quick release leaver is the black leaver at the bottom?

On the top of the unit, lift up the black tab, this is the aquastop which stops the flow of water from the hoses.

Then lift up the silver tab, this releases the hose assembly from the canister. Then slowly lift up the hose assembly and remove canister.

If done correctly, only a couple drops of water should come out of the hose assembly. ( I usually leave a towel to catch any drips)

Remove canister to sink for service.

Mine came with a DVD which contains a video with instructions on proper maintenance. Did yours?

^^ Agree.

There should be a DVD telling you how to do most things included in the UK if bought new. Can't comment for 2nd hand units or those sold in the USA...

All the best

I figured out how to do it a few nights ago and gave the media a good rinse.

No, mine did not come with a DVD. It did come with instructions on how to set it up, but those accidentally got thrown out with the box.
