My husband just got a whole tank setup for a 75g which included a Fluval 405. I hooked it all up to a 5g bucket on the counter and after checking it all visually and priming it, plugged it in. It's powering just fine, but there are little rivulets of water coming out just on the edges of the handles.

I'm not all that savvy with canister filters as of yet. I have a Fluval 204 that used to do this and I cured it by basically leaning on the cover when I closed it. That's not working with the 405. Does anyone have any tricks of the trade they can share?? This is so frustrating.

Have you greased the seal ? That usually works for me
Also some water sometimes gets trapped between the cover and seal which will dry out soon might be that

Because it's a Fluval?

Try Vaseline on the seals. If not then it may require a new O ring. But, before that, where is it leaking from? Someone had a leaky *05 filter and they replaced the aqua stop valve to cure it.

I did put some Vaseline on the O ring and that doesn't seem to help at all. It's leaking right at the hinges of the handles.

I just took it apart again, and when I checked the impeller cover one of the clips that holds it in came off in my hand. I think it was already broken. Would that cause it to leak?

Also, shouldn't the cover go down completely so there's hardly any seam showing?

Hi TOS,

I just checked my old 304 and I can easily get my finger nail into the seem between the cover and the cannister. I do sometimes have problems getting it sealed properly. But I'm guessing that yours needs a new main O ring and now an impeller cover. I have found that the actual handles used to open and close up the filter are a weak point as they get older. They break at the most inconvienant time esp. after installing a new tighter O ring. I'd get a set of those as well. I got my parts off of fleabay. Prices vary so look for a good price.

Aloha,

Erik

Thanks, all. I've found a reasonable source and I'm going to buy 2. I found quite a few comments elsewhere on the web about people having the complaint that these things break on a regular basis.
