When I set up my 260l tank I got a new fluval 305 to go with my old fluval 203 and have them both set up and running fine.

The problem is that the 305 does not seem to be filtering as much muck out of the water as the 203.
when I open them up for cleaning the 203 needs it, but the 305 is almost clean.
the last twice that I have done a water change when I reconnect the pipes, open up the taps and start it up it dumps a load of brown muck into the water. As if its all settled in the outlet pipe.
Surely there should not be this amount of muck in the outlet water?
It appears like the water is bypassing the actual filters?
Also there always appears to be small particles floating in the water.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
Do I have a duff filter?
Any tips on setting up inlet/outlets?
any help or advice would be appreciated

funny to come across this topic..i just cleaned my 305 yesterday :)
the muck is normal...from cleaning the media, etc., crap gets loose and then when you turn it back on it spits some of it out into the tank...but it should clear up in NO time (mine was like 30 mins or less)..no need to worry. maybe next time, dont wait so long to do maintenance on the filter and (we) wont see so much gunk dislodged..but i only crack mine every three or so months when the flow is reduced.
again, this is normal in my experience.
cheers

can you give me some information on the type, and layout, of the media in the 305? it may well help to sort it.

current media layout in each tray is :

top - bio max in both sides
mid - filter floss in both sides
bottom - biomax in one side, carbon in the other.

the manual recommends the biomax tubes to be in the top tray and the carbon to be in the bottom. i have always used filter floss in my other filters to catch the finer particles.

hope this helps

i feel your problem is an, almost total lack of mechanical filtration. i dont know how water flows in the 305, (i would never even dream of using one.) but thats your problem. try to duplicate the setup from your 205

If the 305 is like the old 304 filter then it has a whole bunch of coarse sponges as a pre-filter before it gets to the other filter media.

I would put the filter floss at the bottom, carbon/bio media next then bio media at the top with a small amount of filter floss to cover the whole thing (this is how I always used to set my fluvals up in tropical tanks). Make sure you cleans the sponges out regularly in a bucket of tank water. If it does chuck out a load of gunk then you could always put the outlet pipe into a bucket and turn it on for a few seconds to clear the gunk before returning it to the tank.
