Can someone explain what the different coloured filters are. In my fluval3+ I have two white ones on the outside and a black one in the middle. Im just wondering what difference they make? Ive a 29 gallon tank thats been running four months. Am I ok to leave the black and whites ones in, apart from obvious cleaning of the filter?

The balck one is activated carbon
after 6-8weeks the avtivated part is nolonger active
so it should be replaced.

personally I only use the two outer sponges on my plus4

I Agree
Only use the carbon after tank treatment and you wish to remove traces of medication.

The white filter is a polyester pad and removes very fine dirt stick it in to help with clarity just chunck it away and replace it every couple of weeks. The carbon pad helps to remove discolouration and smells from the tank particularly tanin from wood. Replace every 4-6 weeks because once its full it will dump stuff back in and remove chemicals you want to keep.

I also got a white middle filter so should I put that one in now?
Sorry, forgot to say I used this pad in the middle section - between the 2 coarser sponges. B)
