In general the fluval filters (with the exception of the FX5) don't have a very good reputationand IMO you would be Much better off with something like a Tetratec EX700 or one of the smaller eheims (not the ecco range)

The Ecco doesn't have the build quality of the true eheims, and i believe isn't even built by the same company

The 205 is an excellent filter. For £40 brand new, it's even better

While fluval don't have the best reputation, there are lots on here who really like them, and they are a big popular brand (with a 3 year garuntee, and spares after that period should be very easy and cheap to get hold of).

Value for money wise, £40 for a 205 beats anything I can think of, it would be silly to pass over the opportunity IMO.

As with any filter, look after it and you will most likely have it run trouble free for many years. This mainly means lubricating the O-ring (with vaseline, or the safer option of silicone grease - both very cheap) and cleaning the impeller.

Sumps and Wet/dry systems are often not practicle for everyone ConstantGrower

Actually, a sump would be an even more cost effective option, if you can drill the tank, or just get an overflow box.

Do take up alot of space though, and require more work.

Worst thing about external fluvals is the stupid ribbed pipes, all the rubbish gets stuck and they are a NIGHTMARE to clean!!

The eheim's are far superior after having a few different ones of each

Odd since that doesn't really have much to do with sumps...

However if the ribbed hose its that much of a burden to you, you can just change it for clear hose literally a few £.

Tetratecs already come with clear hose if that's what the OP is going to go for .

Eheims come with green hose.
