Fluval 204 / 304 Externals..

I have a Fluval 204 and Fluval 304 external filters that are running at about 1/4 of their output because of muck...

How is the best way to clean them without killing all the bacteria?

All I do with my external is take out the media a ring it out that gets rid of most of the crap and then put it back.
