hi i have a fluval 2 plus internal filter in my 4ft long tank, i also have a powerhead running at the other end of my tank( see photo).
is the powerhead serving any purpose in the tank or is it just a noisy bubble machine http://i1011.photobucket.com/albums/af232/...s/SDC10904.jpge

thanks

A 2 plus?! How many gallons is your tank? They're rated for 34 gallons at the most!!!

To my understanding all a powehead does is circulate the water more vigorously to allow for better oxygenation.

the tanks 35 gallons/ 113 litres, its just finished cycling so it must be ok

Out of interest, what sort of cycling did you do on it, fish-in or fishless?
If it was fishless how much ammonia were you adding each time?
I'm just curious as I am looking to get one of these filters, but was worried about the biological capability of it, but from what you have said it sounds like it is PLENTY capable for it's rated tank size! :good:

Mhm, personally I don't think the 2+ is big enough even for the 2ft mine is in... I've got a 4+ in my 4ft, plus an extra Eheim, and I wouldn't consider it overfiltered.

A power head is often used by plant people to make sure the water in a tank is well mixed and there are no local spots with any chemical difference to the rest of the tank. It becomes even more critical when the plant count is high because the plants can interfere with good water circulation and mixing. I run a power head in lots of my tanks to circulate the water through sponge filters. It serves the purpose of circulating the water and provides a great biofilter set up in the bargain.
