Fluval 2 Plus Installation Help

ive just bought one of these filter/pumps but im alittle confused on how to use it the filter box section has a white filter media on each side and it came with 2 smaller media (a black one and a white one) now do i just leave it as it came out of the box or do i put one of the black or white smaller media in between the filter body.? didnt think these things could be so hard to understand but the instructions dont mention anything about it

the smaller black one is a carbon pad ( for removing meds and other nasties,ie.colours,) the white one is a polishing pad for making the water crystal clear- both need to be changed after a few days of use and disgarded-unlike the thick black sponge thats in there - that stays.
they dont need to be in there right now unless of course you need to remove meds (black) or fine particles ( white)

replacements are cheap enuff and dont need to be fluval, but may need to be cut to size.
