I want a small external(probably buy it second hand) for my 35 litre arc tank.. but it will be going in my bedroom, so the filter must be silent or almost silent. i will have a cabinet, so that could block some of the sound, but non the less it will be approx 1.5ft from my head when i go to sleep. is the fluva 105 any good?

Fluvals have a reasonable reputation but Eheims have a better rep. You may find them more expensive but perhaps quieter too. Try searching for the classic filters for the cheapest.

Ive used 104, 204, 105, 205, 305 and the 405 and enclosed in the cabinet the only thing i hear is the water rippling the surface of the water ;)

I have a 105 on a shelf (no cabinet) on an ~80l tank with plecs and shrimp and find its great and silent. I have to lower myself down to it's height and put my head 2' away from it until I can hear a faint hum (wouldn't nearly be enough to keep me awake though, I have a small tank with a trickle filter and cheap Resun external around 1' away from my head on my bedside) . With a cabinet you'll be fine, I cant hear my 305 through the cabinet at all with my head right outside it.

ok, thanks, there are some good reviews of it being quiet on the net too, so thats sorted..

can anyone tell me if the tube diameter is 12mm??

Sounds about right on the tube diameter, but await confirmation.

Most new Fluvals start noisy for the first day or two, then quieten down after "running in". Then they get old, after about 3-4 years and start to get noisy again. Sometimes at this point, replacing the impeller and/or bearings will shut it up, but in most cases, it's the motor unit starting to go, and the only thing you can do about that (cost effectively at least) is replace the whole filter...

All the best
