I was looking around at different ways of filtering and I came across the fluidised bed system. I was wondering if anyone had used one and what their experience of it was like.

they work well but you need to prefilter the water before it goes into the unit. They also need to be set up properly and if they don't have enough water moving through them they don't work as effectively.

One final problem is power cuts. Once the sand settles you will get almost all the bacteria in anaerobic conditions. This leads many to hypothesise that the bacteria die off at a fast rate.

However, you can get a huge amount of surface area, so set it up right and you will be laughing.

Good point .. I wonder if anyone uses an UPS (uninterruptible power supply) for their fish equipment?
