I was looking on Aquabid today, and some Flowerhorn cichlids sell for $700 or more!! Why is this? Do people show them? I'm a bit confused. They are very pretty, but that's a lot of money to pay for one fish.

Flowerhorms are hybrid cichlids.... like a texas with a convict or something or a texas and a red devil.... The harder it is to breed the two species... the more the fish will be worth.... i think the flowerhorm offspring are infertile as well so you can't just breed two flowerhorns... you need to keep the two seperate species breeding

Are you sure they are sterile? I thought flowerhorn could be bred. If they are sterile, why do we not know their lineage? If they can only be produced by the crossing of several species, shouldn't we know what those species are?

wuuuhahhahahah relax peeps.. fish are fish..peep will buy, no matter how much.. they like they buy, well specially if they got the money.

No Fh is not about sterile or fertile.. its more of selective breeding, getting that gene or trait to pass on to the next gen. of what hobbyist is eager to gain :good:

FH lovers are :S

That may be the case in some fish paintsn, such as the betta, but i beleive genetic testing has been done on FH fish, and it has shown that they are indeed a hybrid of several cichlid species.

Yes flowerhorns are a hybrid of possibly several cichlids.

They are usually fertile although certain types tend not to be (SRS etc).

They are expensive for a number of reasons but the price of the more common types are coming down, bog standard zz are very cheap for example.

they are infertile for many reasons..

some are not due to genetics at all.. some are hormone induced that they cant be fertile for some reason or so.. yes they have been goin lower... but still High Quality Fh are still high.. and no i really dont think the craze has ended..specially knowing that the US is 10yrs behind Overseas countries.. :-( that only gives me ambitions to bring up my passion for these Hybrids.. :good:

Always knew we were 10 years behind in something. :D

I dont think iv actually even seen a flower horn aside from pictures online.

umm.. just thought I'd give my two cents.

Flower horns were a craze here in Malaysia around 5 years back. Suddenly everyone wanted one, and the price for a 'good' FH could go up to the thousands of Ringgit. Many characteristics were looked into, like the 'bump' on the head of the FH. The bigger, the better. Fish shops that sell only FH were mushrooming.

Me and my friends too were caught in the fever, and added tanks to our houses like nobody's business lol. :D
I even succeded in breeding a few fry, and the most expensive FH i bought was RM 50 (USD 13?). As I was still a high school student back then, I could not afford to buy expensive ones.

But now, all those FH fish shops have closed business. Nobody wants to keep a FH anymore. Myself included; gave all mine away 3 years ago. :X It is rare to see a FH now in a lfs, and now the 'good' ones that could catch thousands of ringgits back then are being sold for just hundreds. I guess the same can be said for neighbouring countries like Singapore but i might be wrong here.

It's kind of sad and depressing for all those FH bought and bred by people during that time. Most of them are unwanted now, and I can only guess what happened to them. :( :(

It's just my thoughts and insights though.

They have some full grown fh at my lps and the are only $70 and they are very high quality fish Because I know the owner and have seen his breeding facility and he said the ones he sells are not sterile.

some FH cost a lot cuz they might have very nice traits to them, which make them rare
things like big koks, nice line or even no line, fins, pearls, etc make them cost more.
