I was just given some flowerpots from a friend that uses them in all of his tanks. I'm not sure what they're made of.

Anyway, when I put one into my 4 gallon, it started getting little streams of bubbles coming up from the top of it. The streams lasted for a couple minutes, and after that they stopped.

What I'm wondering is if the streams of bubbles are normal, or if I should take the flower pot out of my aquarium.

If you cleaned them thoroughly before use then they should be ok. I'm guessing they're made of a porous material such as porcelin. the stream of bubbles is just oxygen escaping under the pressure of the water. Should be fine ;)

I boiled them for 20 minutes before putting them in the tank. I wasn't sure if the flower pot was leaking some kind of chemicals into my tank! LOL  Thanks for the help :)

Sounds like they are just your average clay pots. They all bubble like that when you put them in water.

I didn't notice my first ones (put in there a couple months ago) bubbling, so I was worried :*)

Somewhere I read that if you put vinegar in the clay pots and it bubbles that it is NOT ok to put in an aquarium. If no bubbles it is safe. Anybody else know about this? I bought a couple and tested them this way and they were ok. Just waiting to stick them together and add rocks to the outside for my DIY cave. Looks like the others have answered the bubbles in the water for you already.

I think the vinegar method is aimed at people putting rocks in their tanks. :)

Normal plant pots should not be made of anything like limestone etc that would fizz.

I've never heard of the vinegar test. What are you testing the rocks for? I'm curious, when would you need to do this?

yeah, it's just oxygen, like stated, happens all the tiem

cutechic most likely the pots are made out of clay are they a reddish brown color? and as far as the stream of bubbles thats fine it just means that the material in the pots is porous and is absorbing the water. as long as your fish are happy and there is no water discoloration all should be well. hope this helps
Pete
