Flower pots in tanks

Im not sure if this post belongs here or not but since I see them more in cichlid tanks then community tanks so I thought id ask here.

What should some one look for in the clay pots for a tank?? is there any to stay away from?

Basically I was thinking of getting some but I dont want to add any that may leach any impuritys into my tank. Are there good ones? bad ones? or are they all the same? I have never had them in my tanks before and dont want to make a mistake, always used rocks in the past for caves and boundries.

I just picked up a couple at the grocery store last month and have them in different tanks and the levels have stayed the same and the fish basically have ignored them. In the fishes defense I do have other caves and driftwood and plants that they seem to favor over the pots.
I haven't heard that there is one clay pot that is better than another which is a good thing, because I've never really seen a variety in brands of them, only in size and style.

In this same vein, are the colored clay pots safe? I've seen some that I would much rather try than the plain old red clay. Anyone know?

I used a large teracotta pot with one of my catfish. all was fine until he through it against the front glass and smashed it. 9the pot, not the glass). there were very sharp edges so just make sure that it can't be broken and the fish isn't big enough to smash the glass with it.

YIKES!!! That is frightening just to think about. He could have destroyed his home and been on the floor.
Very lucky it was only the pot and not much more disasterous!
