Ok, so i have been doing a fishless cycle on my little fry tank (28ltr Aquastart by AquaOne) for some time now. Processing ammonia but nitrItes are still very high.
It was supplied with a Aqua mini filter containing just a matchbox sized piece of foam. In my expert  opinion I thought this little filter was never going to cycle the tank and even if it did it would struggle to cope with the overstocking with fry. What I needed was a larger filter but without increasing the flow.

Therfore I, after researching, purchased an Ehiem Powerball internal for 30-60ltr noteing that it had an adjustable flow.

After loading it with my cycling media plus mature stuff from my main tank I installed it in my tank. The flow was very strong as I was warned so I turned the flow adjuster down. It did not lessen the flow it just concentrated it into a squirt, a bit like placing you thumb over the end of a hosepipe.

I managed to slow it a little by adding some fine media but was wondering if a spraybar might help?

Does anybody have any ideas on lessening the current before I have to own up to the wife that I have wasted more money on my hobby by not listening to advice

One way might be to direct the flow into the side of the aquarium, so if it were on the right side, pointing towards the left side of the tank, angle it towards the back wall of the tank so it diffuses. I've done that in the past and its worked ok (but mind you don't squirt water over the back edge of the tank ;))

i had the same problem when i changed to a Ehiem Powerball, as i wanted the air power head, i had to redirect to the side to difuse the flow, either that or get a ornament or something like that infront of the nozzle that will difuse the flow hopefully. :)

Yup, did the dirctecting toward the back (polystyrene background) thing. Helped but looking at the particles the current is still on the strong side.

ok, so the Eheim is up for sale on the for sale forum

m8 that eden filter i linked to on your other thread would be perfect for your setup..

the flow control on it is a very simple design that works but i never have it on anything other than full as its not that powerful.

Sorry, yes that would have been the jobbie :good: Went a bit ott and changed the whole set up for the AquaOne 380 (34ltr) with the canopy trickle filter (a smaller version of my Aquaone 850) Now I have the scope to tweak the filter to my hearts content!!
