So. What does anyone know about the Freshwater Flounder? (they're really cool lookin'!)

I can take pictures tomorrow for those interested.

i read an aoodball review about people keeping them but know nothing! anyone care to share!  ah i see they prefer sand and get 4-5 inches! any more, diet, cost of such a cool looking dude or dudette

you got any names for these flounders, latin english or even any web sites handy cheers!

only the english which is freshwater flounder. Was unable to find any websites about them myself.

all i found was Achirus lineatus but i read that there are others so not sure will have to ask wharf aqautics i reckon as they seem to be the most helpful form past info!

I found somewhere listing a bit about them (not as much as I'd hoped for) and there's actually also a "peacock" flounder that has blue rings on it.

I payed about 5 bucks for mine.

I also heard they're difficult to keep.... any ideas/ suggestions?

I'm thinking about setting up a new tank just for him and the elephant nose- seeing as they both prefer sand, and I don't have sand for them right now.

Is your flounder the same as mine?

I use ultra fine gravel and the flounder is able to bury itself underneath ok.

no, the flounder hasn't ever buried itself... is it crucial for them to be able to do that? the LFS had NO substate in with them... He seems to REALLY enjoy hanging out on the glass though.

and yes, mine is identical to yours. =)

Not sure if it is critical for them, but the lfs I bought it from keep theirs in sand.

During the day mine tends to be under the gravel, but in the evening it tends to stick to the side of the tank

There are several species of flounder. Only thing is one is s true FRESH water flounder. Most flounders found in LFS are brackish water fish and require brackish water.

Though they may and will live for awhile in the aquarium they are NOT true fresh water flounders. There is a South American species which if I am correct is the ONLY true fresh water species.
Most species found in LFS are brackish water and in time will tend to wither away.

They like to eat brine shrimp, small ghost shrimp, pieces of shrimp, flakes, and most sinking pellets.

They prefer sandy bottom tanks and WILL dig themselves in the sand. The brackish water flounder can live in the aquarium but, if NOT kept wioth brackish water eventualy get ill and die. i would suggest assureing which species it is you got so you can assure you give it the proper care.

These little ones most LFS sell are just young flounders which start off in brakish water creeks and canals then as they mature they make there way into the ocean / flats.
How do I know ?
Well, I see them all the time during breeding sesson and have on several fishing trips cought a few small ones in creeks with a net. these do well AS LONG as they are properly cared for.
I will dig up the books after dinner and try to sort out which species is which.

Hope this helps,
Danny

Alright now I got alittle extra time to better explain, and am not on the go.

Freshwater Flounder Freshwater Sole ???? Here are a few with a better discription. Hopefully this helps alittle more. LOLOL.

I have kept a few and at first did TONS of research on them. Had luck for awhile but the Victorians got the best of me. Had to use tank for Vics.

Achirus achirus ( which is the species I mentioned above. cought by myself in gulf outlet / canal )

This is a Brazilian sole which range from Floridas gulf Coast down to Argentina on the east and Peru on the west.

Achirus fasciatus ( American Sole ) and
Achirus Errans ( Brizilian freshwater sole )

They require warm soft acid water, and prefer temp of 26*c
Freshwater soles are not rare. Even the common eastern American sole, Achirus fasciatus, comes into the freshwater rivers that empty into the ocean, but they never live long in the aquarium.

No one has ever imported the TRUE freshwater Brazilian sole.
This Fish lives very well in the home aquarium and spends it's entire ife in fresh water.

Other Brazilian sole,
Achirus garmani
Achirus jenysi
Achirus mentalis
Achirus microphthalmus
Achirus punctifer

All make interesting aquarium but must be kept with fish larger than themselves.
they like to eat small guppies, shrimp, anything it can fit into it's mouth. Best if kept in dsandy bottom tanks.

Alright now thats about all I know about freshwater flounder / Sole

hope this helps,
Danny

I remember it helped me... LOLOLOL
