out to lunch
so got rid of my bog plants (thanks guys)
but now my real plants keep deciding they dont want to be planted
i got some mini planting pots with some wadding stuff for planting them in
i wrap the wadding around the base of the plant, then stuff it in the pot with a couple of little bits of gravel to add some weight and plant the pot in the gravel

got home last night and of 6 or 7 shoots of Egeria densa only one is still planted and the rest are now floating
actually looks nice, but i'd rather they stay rooted to the bottom - any tips on getting the things to stay where i put them

Andy,
you can buy some wieghty wrap stuff that you can attach to the plants to keep them down.

Are you sure that a certain fish is not uprooting them as I have an Oscar that will destroy his tank in minutes!!

could well be someone uprooting them
the wadding they were wrapped in is still in the plant pot but with perfect little holes where the plant was
wonder if either the wadding shrinks when it gets wet so eventually the holes get too large and the plant just floats away
or someone, probly those pesky platties, is pulling or nibbling at them till they come free

hiya, i use the lead stuff the lfs use, its like a thin strip of u guessed it lead :) u can always push is further down the plant if u think it looks ugly in ur tank...

i had a couple of them pot things but my kissing g's always nibbled at the stem an up the plant would float... also with these lead clips its easy to just re affix it to ur plant.... they also come in handy for weighting down peices of cucumber :)

now im off to finish my xmass shopping and do some mince pies before i go back on a 12 hr shift tomoz lol

Why are you using wadding, Andyt?

I just use gravel in the pots and the weight seems to do a good job of holding the plants down.

If there is a fish uprooting them, and if there is enough room in your other tank, you could put the plants in there (in the pots) to give them a chance to get settled in. Once the roots start to grow they will hold on to the gravel on their own and be harder for a fish to uproot once they go back to the big tank. :D
