Hi,

I bought 2 great looking pieces of bogwood for my new set-up at the weekend, cost me over £40 for both but it was worth it.

One looks like a tree root and is actually to wide for the tank and I will need to chisel a few inches off :/

The other looks like a tree trunk and will stand vertical in the tank, however it is refusing to sink! :grr:

How long do I need to keep it weighted down in water before it will stay down by itself? Is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

Thanks

depending on the size of your wood, I think it could take up to two weeks or even more for it to stay down on it's own. My two small bits of driftwood took 3 and 5 days of soaking while being weighed down to stay down on their own. you could try hanging a lead weight on the end that you want down, or just laying it horisontally for a while with some rocks piled up on it to hold it down...

Soaking is the best way, I have had pieces that have taken a couple / three weeks to become waterlogged enough to sink. The other advantage of the soaking is that it allows the tannins to leak out of the wood and into the bucket, not into your tank. Whilst the tannins are not hazardous some people find the "weak tea" colour it turns the tank water unattractive.

If after a few weeks it still won't sink another way is to attach it to a piece of slate and then bury that slate in the susbstrate. Or alternatively attach some of the little sucker cups used for hiding airlines etc to it and then sucker it to the bottom of the tank......

HTH.... :D

you could put holes in the back where you can't see and put your gravel in the hols to weihg it down.
