i found my apple snail floating around, and i tried pushing it down away from the filter, but when i brought it down to the gravel it just floated back up again... is this ok?

Yes its perfectly normal for the little darlings to bob about from time to time.
They will be just fine and seem to do it as a quick way of getting to the top.lol
If they were dead you would know as they would go a funny blackish colour and hang out of their shells and float.

Do you feed them anything?
They like cuccumber and any other soft veggies.. strawberrys and peeled grapes as a treat and banana but be carefull with this as it fouls your tank quickly.

In the wild, snails do this to "migrate" from one area to another. It's much faster than "walking". They simply float up and let the current move them to a better area. You might need to make sure your snail is getting enough food. Or it may be looking for a mate, and not finding one, trying to move on to a more snail rich area.
