Hi all,

We are getting a new tank tomorrow (very excited), which I want to get up and running ASAP because of our old tank problems (see emergency forum if interested - ammonia spike in previously establish aquarium).

We're going to try a fishless cycle and would like to know where to get the ammonia from to start this off, have looked in various hardware stores etc but to no avail. Any ideas greatfully received...I'm in UK.

Thanks!

Even though I am from the US, I hear everyone saying that they cant get any
ammonium either. What i would suggest is getting everything ready and if you are going to put plants in there do that, because one the plants start do live and decompose after awhile it creates ammonium. Also adding some fish food/flakes will also have to decompose and start the cycle with the ammonium to the different nitrites and nitrates. HTH :D

It has been said somewhere in this forum that in the UK you can get ammonia (NH3) from the "chemist". Over here i am guessing that would be like a pharmacist. Anyhow that is all i can add

Thanks both.

Interesting idea about the chemist/pharmacist (same thing, two names!), I will definitely try there, would not have thought of that one!

Thanks Gixer!

I tried other pharmacies but haven't been to Boots. I shall pop there later.

I got some other stuff yesterday from a tiny hardware store one of the pharmacists recommended but I am not convinced it is the right stuff so it is probably better I get the Boots one if it is known to be clear/pure.
