Anyone got any ideas for fishing bait? I don't have access to live baits or a tackle shop and I'm going tomorrow, so far I've packed bread, bacon, spam, corn and cheese, any other suggestions that the average person has in their house?

Could you use mealworms from a petshop?

Worms from the garden? Or slugs? I know a great way to catch Slugs if they'd be any good to you? Put out a saucer of beer at night. Doesn't have to be anything drinkable, they're not fussy! In the morning you'll have a saucer full of very drunk, sometimes dead, Slugs. They love beer and seem to be able to smell it for ages away. Good way to keep them off your plants as well, 'cause they'll go to the beer instead : )

Try it and see ; )

what are you fishing for? i sea fish occaisonally, and i use mackeral quite sucessfully

Thanks for the suggestions, Carp mainly, but the odd Tench, Rudd, Roach, Bream, Perch and Pike come about, I took some bacon with me and legered and caught mainly Carp and a few Rudd and Roach, I only stuck it two hours as a stupid woman who had 3 dogs off their leads allowed them to run away with all of my bait, so I was rather pissed off. Hoping to go to a local reservoir when it stops raining though as some of the Carp in there are 20-25lb.

Earth worms are supposed to be rather good for catching tench and carp I believe. Not sure about in other countries but in some pet shops in Australia you can buy live earthworms (also some gardening shops sell them in tubs), and you can also get live crickets and cockaroaches. All sold for the reptile keepers (and some bird and fish), so maybe checkout possible live foods at your local pet shops, that you can use as bait.

You could also make some bread dough and use that as bait I have had great sucess with raw bread dough on many types of fish, even if you just use it as a burly instead of on a hook. The yeast in the bread is the secret, apparently fish cant resist yeast.

My Dad reckons mealworms make good bait as well, cant say I have tried them I generally keep them for my finches.

if really pressed you could use shrimp from a dehli seafood marina mix.

Fish will eat just about anything. Ive caught a 2' bass with Fruit Snacks. Just yesterday, a fish snapped my line. I was using a chunk of fake worm on a hook. I usually use worms, i think i will try crickets and mealworms today. Since i have frogs, crickets and mealworms are always around.

liquidized bread crumb slightly wet in a method feeder might be an option. cant think of many more household foods than the ones you already listed. sweetcorn all round favorite or mine, tipped with a red maggot for some movement ;)
