Hello,
I started an aquarium for the first time 3 months ago. I started with a male Betta, then I added 3 tetras, 3 snails and 2 shrimps. (8 gallon)
1 week ago I introduced 2 guppies and 3 flame tetra into the aquarium. They all looked fine and getting along. The guppies were swimming much more than the rest, but I thought it was a species-related behavior.
After 3 days the female guppy died. On her last day she was pretty much swimming statically in the top corner.
2 days after the Betta came out of the usual hiding spot with a much lighter belly and heavily disrupted fins starting from the body (not the edges, see attached pictures). By the afternoon he lose much of his color and fins and died at night (I isolated him from the rest late in the morning).
The morning after the second guppy died (he was showing similar behavior as the female). Then I noticed that one of the "old" neon tetras had a white spot on his back and another one was heavily discolored and swimming diagonally. I separated them from the rest.
The rest of the tetras, shrimps and snails in the aquarium look fine.
I monitored the water levels throughout the week and they all looked great. None of the fishes seemed to lose appetite or swimming in a different way until their symptoms were very strong.

What might have happen? Could it be that the new fishes had a parasite? Can it spread this fast? What should I do with the remaining fishes?
Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you for your feedback. I won't put guppies and Bettas together again to avoid stress in the future.
Isn't it weird though that I haven't seen any attack, both guppies were intact when they died, and none of them stopped eating before dying suddenly? And how about the neon tetras that were in the tank since 3 months? one is dead already and the 2 remaining ones are showing the white back as the first. I am worried about the remaining tetras.... is there a way to make sure it is not a parasite and that they're going to be fine?

What were your water parameters? That's a lot of stock for that tank so it's possible you had an ammonia spike.

the fish have a bacterial infection, probably columnaris. need medication asap
