Anyone else have bettas that like to do tricks? One of my males and my female like to jump out of the water to touch the end of a q-tip or the tip of my finger. Now I'm teaching the female to jump over the q-tip and back into the water.

I have a female and two males who do that. It's very cute - they will jump up to get food off of my fingertip. :D Also, I have a dwarf gourami who will squirt water at the end of my finger to get food. That's pretty darned nifty if I do say so myself!

cool (re; dwarf gourami). I just got 2 neon dwarfs and so far the only trick they seem interested in is trying to eat my arm when I am cleaning the tank.

The bettas were pretty easy to train. I trained the female first. She's pretty young and I discovered early on that she would like to come to the surface to be "pet" whenever I fed her. Of course I tried to resist because I don't want her to be hurt, but sometimes she's prettyinsistent :). So I figured that a safer way for us to play together was to feed her from my hand, as she's gotten older the accuracy has improved so now I just put a piece of food at the ent of my fingertip and she goes right for it...although sometimes she's surprise me and jump when there is no food there! My male is on the other side of the divider and after watching her a few weeks I guess he got jealous or something because whenever she did her trick he would flare at her and swim wildly by the divider glass. So one day I jokingly offered my finger with food to him-I've never seen a fish more excited to jump! Now we have to be really careful with him because he will try to jump out of the water anytime he sees someone's hand nearby (thats why I switched to q-tips...he can be pretty aggressive). My girl seems to be getting the hang of jumping over the qtip now when I put my finger with food on the other side, but Bluey (the boy) can't seem to figure it out. Right now I'm trying to convince him that attacking the qtip and dragging it into the water with him is not a productive way to get the food on the other side...sigh....

We'll keep working on it :).
