I have just bought a second hand fish tank and was wondering what the best way to clean it out was. I have used an ammonia solution to start just to clean the dirt of it but is there anything better that will kill any disease etc or an easy way to remove algae that seems to be stuck on very well. A good scrub has made a difference but there are still slight signs of algae on the glass.
I read that bleach is effective but is this safe?

Bleach is ok in a very weak solution, I believe it should be mixed at the ratio of 1 part bleach to 20 parts water.

Also give it a very good rinse afterwards with fresh water to remove any bleach traces.

If the tank has been dry for awhile no need to worry all aquatic stuff will be dead. To clean hard water marks white vinager with a razor blade.
