How many fish stores can a city support?

we have 4 already here in memphis, along with 5 or so general pet stores.

Family thinks since this is the only thing I am interested in seriously. That I should open up a fish store.

Good question. I'd guess it's tough to tell, and it's probably related to the average income of the community, and how much profit would be enough for you.

I wouldn't think that opening what is basically a "luxury" business, right now, would be a great idea. On the other hand, chances are store rentals are relatively cheap.

Columbus, Ohio, where I live, has a slightly higher population than Memphis, but has... and here I'm guessing a bit... probably 7 fish specific retailers and at least 12-15 pet stores. But I've been told that Ohio has a higher percentage of fishkeepers than most states, so who knows? I imagine it would be difficult to be a small LFS owner. One does not make one's fortune as one. But I don't think most small LFS owners are money oriented people.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

not sure how big the city you live in is...

but off the top of my head...there are between 20 - 30 lfs in melbourne, which has 3 million people living here

My coworker and I were mulling over this same thought because our company just merged with another and there are layoff threats now. We're in New York City, so there's plenty-o-fish-competition here.

You might be better off selling your fish via internet to begin with. That way you have a larger (potential) client base and should lower your overhead. If you build up enough dedicated clientele, then maybe you can open a brick-and-mortar store in a few years. Like somebody else mentioned... it might not be wise to open a "luxury" business (store) in the current economy.

The population of the town I live in is 117,000.

We have eight stores within 5 miles, all selling a fairly wide range of tropical fish.

Of those eight, five sell only fish and of those five, one sells only marine.

The only two I ever buy livestock from are both fish-hobbists who decided to set up shops.

If I want to go up to 40 miles from home, there are another 26 places I can buy fish from, plus two public aquariums where I can see things like full-grown arrowana, pacu, red-tailed catfish and nurse sharks!

The other thing to consider is how trusted those other fish/pet stores are. If they are really really good at what they do and they have a lot of loyal customers, it would be tough competition. The metro area I live in is 2 - 3 million, and there are 4 pet superstores and 2 other fish stores w/i a 5 mile radius, and they are all bad places to buy fish at. A good fish store in this area would surely make it. All told there are over 30 pet superstores and fish stores in the metro, and sadly only one that I trust to buy fish from. That one is 30 minutes away by freeway!

u cna come make a fish store in my town cause we dont have one and i hafta get a ride to the next town which is 45mins away

1 of the 4 fish stores is just terible, 2 are almost all saltwater and the last one is a fairly good store.

I have money to back me up from family buisness. This is the only reason I am even considering it so I don't have to take out large bank loans.

Thanks for the input.

Ohh and for store set up I am debating on either a continuous over flow system and partical water changes. which do yall like best?
