Hi, I am recently registered here, but have been looking at this website for useful info for a while now. I currently have a estimated 5 gallon tank, and also a 22.5 gallon Tank.

First 1 was the 5 Gallon, and was bought as a al-in-one package, while the 22.5 gallon, i got from a friend for nothing :).
Im planning to take all the stuff out of the 5G tank now as there is nothing in it,
I then plan to take out the Underground Filter,as this doenst seem to work (all there is is a airstone which goes down a tube to the UGF), so that i hopefully wont have the problem with muck building up on the bottom, causing the water to stink, even a Gravel cleaner has a problem with getting rid of it.

Anyway I plan to put in the Hexagon 5G a layer of Peat, then Gravel (currently the gravel appears to be about 3' thick) , and then using a air-based filter cartridge system, with living plants. Is this a good idea.

I plan to move my small blue Ram into this 5G Tank later, as this is much easier to change amounts of water. Reason for moving Ram, ive lost 1 already,I found dead under the Filter/Pump, and the other 1, i found trying to do the same even though the filter is embedded in the gravel, very strange behaviour.

I also plan to move neon tetras into the 5G, from the 22.5G, so ill have about 6 fish, will this safe, as ive had alot more in the 5G, without any complications (I had at 1 stage 2 Dwarf Gourmies, 6 White Cloud Minnows, 6 Neon Tetras, 4 Ghost Shrimps, and a Butterfly Pleco all in the 5G Hex).

If you got any recommendations, please let me know, Thx

Welcome :D

Why are you going to put the neons into the 5gal?

Why not put the Ram and the neons in the 22.5?

What else are in the 22.5?

So yur moving the Ram from the 22.5 to the 5gal because of preblems with the 22.5? I would try to figer out what is going on with with that tank.

I would use the 5gal for maybe a betta or something. I think a single ram needs at least a 10gal tank.

Someone else will come along with some more better advice ;)

Good Luck,
Wolf

A 5 gallon realy isn't suitable for neons or a ram, let alone both. If you want to stock the 5 gallon, a single betta or dwarf gourami or honey gourami is an option. However, by the sounds of it, it would make a very ncie heavily planted shrimp tank and leave out the fish.

What you should do is keep everything in the 22.5 and also answer the questions that have been asked previously. I'm not sure what the problem has been with the larger tank but it's probably something that can easily be fixed by replacing the filter (I believe this is what you mentioned was the problem). However, remember to keep the media or you'll cause a mini-cycle as you'll be taking out all the good bacteria that grow in your filter.

Also, you asked if water changes in teh 5 gallon would be easier. I suppose they are in a sense but you will have to do them twice weekly to keep up with the bio-load in such a small volume. Honestly, I would just fix the problem in the 22.5 and get something new for the 5. Oh and rams realy do much better in pairs so, once everything's fixed, maybe replace the one you lost to keep your current one some company.

In response to the 5G tank, I had alot of fish in it, for quite a while, with water changes fortnightly. I had no complications with this setup.

In the past I had 2 Blue Dwarf Gouramis,6 Neons, 7 White Cloud Minnows,4 Ghost Shrimp, and 1 Butterfly Pleco in the 5G Tank and they all seemed to be very happy.

Now in the 22.5G, I Have got 2 Dwarf Gourami,, 4 Honey Gourami, 1 Angelfish (had 2, the other died), 6 Neon, 6 Minnows (1 is in a Plant growing tank), 6 Silvertip Tetra, 4 Algae Eater, 6 Peppered Cories, 1 Ram, 4 Shrimps, 6 Glass Catfish.
Obviously this is way too many fish in the tank and once the 5G is set up again, will be decreased again.

Another another annoyance with the 22.5G Tank is that ive got some bogwood in the bottom, and quite often the water turns brown.
I already got a filter/pump system, which I have got activated carbon in the refillable cartridge.

I know this falls under a diff subject, but any info about this would be useful thx
