Hi everyone. I recently bought some new fish for my tank and feeding time has become alot more frantic than it was before. An old emperor tetra got over enthusiastic and jumped out of the water when lunging for food (I have a lid - it got out because the feeding hatch was open and I was still dropping in some flakes). It landed on a hard wooden floor and I immediately picked it up and put it back in the tank - nothing like this has happened before. The fish looks pretty unhealthy now and has since remained in one spot in the corner of the tank, frantically flapping it's fins. My question is basically is the fish now likely to die? It seems like it would be a painful fall.

It may just be stressed out.

It won't neccessarily die, but you will have to make sure you keep an eye on it in case it get fungus or anything like that; did you wet your hands before you picked it up?

If not, you'll possibly have damaged its mucous coating allowing the fungus to get in.

Not that I'm blaming you, at all; it's the automatic reaction when a fish jumps is to get it back in the water asap!

Nothing you can do really, except watch it and keep your fingers crossed.

No I had dry hands  I admit I just panicked and grabbed it - probably wasn't even as gentle as I should have been either. I guess I'll just need to see how it behaves when I feed it tommorow. Thanks for the reply :)

You're very welcome :)

Never mind; like I said; it's the most natural thing in the world to want to get it back in the water!

With a bit of luck it'll be fine; you'll just have to see how it goes :good:

I'd be shocked after the equivilant of a fall from a sky scraper lol, keep a close eye after the lights have been off all night then if its not chilled out by the morning you may find it floating soon. :(

if its any consolation, when i was moving my female molly from the tank while i was rescaping, she must have jumped from the big bucket she was in at some point during rescaping, coz i found her on the carpet after i'd finished (about 20 mins). i prodded her, she was still alive, so i put her into the water and she was absolutely fine! fish can be pretty resilient i think, but defo watch the poor little tetra ;)

Yeah I thought that about the sky scraper fall but my brother assured me that it doesn't really work like that because gravity affects basically every creature the same way - no matter the size  Glad to hear about your molly fluffycabbage, I just found a video on youtube where some idiot basically encourages his fish to jump out of the tank :grr: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGYvfrQy2_M
