Hi all,

My name is Mark and I live in New Jersey, USA.

Just joined this forum to see if anyone is able to identify this fish that I purchased at a local pet store. Nobody at the store knew what is was. They said that it came in with a shipment of hatchetfish.

It looks like some kind of tetra. It schools with my larger tetras. Not many markings. Slight vertical tetra-like bars on it's side, but very faint. Slight metallic green tint on its lower half. The only real distinct marking is a dark black edge on its anal fin which may be visible in one photo. Sorry for the poor photos; it is a fast fish!

Any help would be appreciated! I have never seen this fish before in a store or in books.

attached is a photo, I can attach more if needed.

Well all tetras have an adipose fin. So check for it. Its between the dorsal fin and caudal fin. Also how big is it? I cant tell exactly even with the picture. For a second it looked like a silver dollar to me but it may just be a type of tetra. Try and take more pictures of it from other angels and not one that shines so much scale wise so i can help furthermore :)

you are all wrong it is a Brachychalcinus orbicularis
see the profile i did on them way back in 2005

Every single one of the fish on your thread has a significant and noticeable dip where the head joins the body. This fish is more domed, definitely not dipped.

Nelly may well be right with the false black tetra though.

I think The Wolf is absolutely correct! It is about the size of a silver dollar, but the head is not as thick as a silver dollar and the fins are very different. The pictures on your thread look like it.

Thank you all for the quick responses! I was not expecting anything so soon. I have had fish my entire life and have never seen one of these.

Here is another photo, to the right of the Congo Tetras. I'm having trouble loading photos. It says the files are too big.

Sorry for the poor photos! Without the flash, all I get is a blur. With the flash, you can't see the fins well and the fish is too bright. I'll have to read the section about how to photograph fish.

Thanks, everyone, for all your help! This is a nice forum. I will have to familiarize myself with it and try to contribute in the future.
