We could do with a better picture, TBH, but I'm guessing maybe banded leporinus?

Oh, and do, please, impress upon your friends that they shouldn't, ever buy you fish; they might not be suitable for your tank or compatible with your other fish  :/

For instance, if these fish are banded leporinus, they'll grow to around a foot long (so you'll need at least a 5' tank) and should be kept in a shoal of at least six. or as a single specimen, as small numbers will be aggressive to each other.

Try this, hope it helps.

Thanks for the advise, my children bought them as part of the Christmas prezzie of the tank!

Cheers!

Nice fish

They are; I've been considering a small shoal for my 5'x2'x2'.

The species is probably Leporinus fasciatus as there are ten vertical bars, and the very similar L. affinis with which this species is frequently confused has only eight.  There are other anatomical differences.

At 12 inches, it needs a huge aquarium, and nothing less than a 7-foot tank should be considered for a group.  And it should be in a group of six (or more); with just the two as mentioned in post #1 there will probably soon be issues arising from its aggressive nature.

This fish is primarily vegetarian and will mow down most aquarium plants (Java Fern may escape), but it will eat smaller fish.  This is really not a home aquarium fish in any sense.  At the Vancouver Aquarium, they have a group of this species, and they are in the water portion (along with a group of Pacu which are even larger) of the enclosure holding the two Spectacled Caiman (a 5-6 foot crocodilian species), which should give one pause for thought.

Byron.

Thanks for the great info there, Byron; I'm crossing them off my list!

Thanks Byron, unlike Fluttermoth, I can't cross them off my list, I have 2! But certainly given me food for thought!

Talking to my children who bought these for me, the repreratable Aquaruim owner never mentioned any of these facts on the day or purchase, disappointing, not the fish, just the guy that sold them!

Once again thanks for the info.
