Hi All,

This is my first post. Ive just bought a new Interpet 48Litre tank with a pf1 filter. This will be the first time ive had a fish tank since being a child. Ive been reading around the interent on various websites for advice, and am currently cycling my tank without any fish. Im planning on having a planted aquarium with many plants and hairgrass, but was planning on adding the plants after the cycling.

Im trying to decide on what fish to put in the new tank and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. So far, here is what I have decided :

2 Scarlet Badis
8 Rummynose tetra (or similar)
6 Cherry Shrimp

Do you think this would be a good choice? Im not totally decided on the tetras, but would like a schooling type fish.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks

Mark

Lol you like red then?

I'm not expert (I'm sure one will be along shortly) but it looks arlight to me. Mind you I'd never heard of the first ones, I had to google them.

evening mark, i'm new to the hobby also, and can say this is a great forum with good prompt answers to all questions from some good people :good:

sorry i cant help with your fish choice, but rummy's rock. my local store has a handful of fully grown. cant wait for mine to look that good.

mick.

Hi

Thanks for you comments, yes I do like red and blue, I was just trying to find a few bright coloured exotic fish which would stand out against the plants. Its very difficult trying to find nice fish that will suit a 48 Litre tank.

Cheers

i'm not sure how 48L converts to gallons but theres a section on the top of this forum for beginners, if you go down theres a article on fish for 10 gallon tanks. Might be worth a read!

Would this be the 48ltr "Fishbox" by Interpet, lovely tank and I love the lighting on it, roughly works out about 10 gallons, there's a calculator at the top of the forum and you can use the aqua advisor thingy to help with your stocking, hope this helps, any pics. once the tank is set up ?

Hi

Yes thats the tank. Ive used the advisor tool and it says its fine with those fish. Yes I will definately post pics when the tanks finally been set-up properly and stocked. Just wondering if anyone got any better ideas instead of the rummy nose tetras?

Harlequins? Mind you I would say that coz I love them!

Hi and Welcome to TFF!

I guess that some might quibble that the 8 rummys might get a bit big for that tank (the little badis will stay quite small I believe) but really, if you have good filtration and establish good maintenance habits that might really be quite a nice stocking.

You have studied the different types of cycles and are dosing household ammonia or feeding fishfood to the tank then? You're aware the process takes usually between one and two months? We just like to check on newcomers to see what sort of info they've had on this.

Im using the interpet filter start solution that came with my tank, but have bought a water test kit and am in no rush to add any fish. I want to make sure the water and tank is safe for them. Im also going to replace the gravel I have in the tank at the moment with some caribsea eco-complete I have ordered, which should be better for all the plants.

Regarding my fish choice, I think after lots of reading I have decided on the following :

4 Scarlet badis (2 males and 2 females)
14 Ember Tetras
5 cherry shrimp

According to AQAdvisor I get the following results for my tank and filter :

Your aquarium filtration capacity for above selected species is 139%.
Recommended water change schedule: 19% per week.
Your aquarium stocking level is 75%.

Ah, so you're not feeding the bacteria yet? The cycle process will not have started yet then. Cycling is a much more important focus at this point than fish.

As mentioned im using the interpet filter start solution. Ive been using it for a week and a half so far, adding it every 2 days.

My concern is that we've had others use this and after a few weeks they've given up and then just started their ammonia cycle from scratch. I think we even had a recent one!
