Whats everyones best method of crushing flake for fry?

Pinching with fingers doesnt quite do it. Ive tried emptying half the tub and stacking the hell out of it which doesnt work great.

Best way so far is crushing with the bottom of a glass but still not getting the results id want

Pestle and mortar. I have a small one, probably intended for crushing dried herbs, which is perfect for fish food.

Edited to add - a ceramic one rather than a wood one :)

Thanks Essjay i did wonder about a pestle and mortar. I will have to purchase one

I use my fingers to crush in the palm of my hand
I tried that tbh which will work for the size my fry are now but in the first few weeks it needs to be powder really. Ill try a pestle and mortar for when their that small.

Just crushed some bug bites up which as worked great and gone down well🙂

I just learned recently that Bug Bites has a flake-form, as well as the tiny pellet-like version...need to give those a try, getting low on flakes, anyway

Nice knowing its all good ingredients aswel with no meal etc

When you get the mortar and pestal, presumably stone, it will tell you to clean it with salt. I used aquarium salt, and you will want to grind it in there until it comes out white, dumping the gray powder out when it gets too dirty. This will get all of the stone dust out and clean it. I then rinsed it out pretty well with fresh water. I also seasoned mine with garlic, and do so again every once and awhile.

For fry food, I find that I can easily crush flakes in my hand(s), effectively grinding the flakes together. For other powders, you could use a mortar and pestal, but I use a magic bullet with the coffee grinder blade and it works great. (I use it to powder split peas (goes with spirulina powder for daphnia food) and chicken starter (mixed with whole wheat flour and corn meal for white worm food). :)

my method is probably way less civilized than all yours but it works
get food in envelope
put envelope on ground
use hammer to smash it into fine powder, fry love it
